Question: Are there any difference in maternal and neonatal outcomes in women who delayed childbearing (>=35 years old) compared with women (<35yo)?
Answer: Five recent cohort studies have compared pregnancy outcomes in women aged 35 and over with women aged 34 and below (some studies included women aged 18 or 20 to 34). Adverse outcomes associated with increased age include miscarriage, chromosomal abnormalities, congenital anomalies, gestational diabetes, placenta previa, cesarean delivery, macrosomia, hypertension, preterm delivery, low birth weight, asymptomatic hypoglycemia, and wet lung syndrome. (1-4)
One study among nulliparae(5) found no significant difference in the rate of preterm delivery, postterm delivery, caesarean section rate, low birth weight, macrosomia, still birth rate or birth asphyxia. Marai et al (4) also note that although the rates of poor foetal and neonatal outcome indices seem to increase for the older gravidae, the difference was not statistically significant.
