Overview
This meeting is an excellent opportunity to find out about the work that the LSTM/RCOG International Partnership is undertaking to improve women’s healthcare and contributing to the challenges of Millennium Development Goals 4; reducing child mortality and 5; reducing maternal mortality. We are keen to harness information to better support all those concerned and discuss ways in which we can all work together using our knowledge and experience for the greater good of newborn and maternal health in the future.
This programme will be delivered by national and international experts in their fields. The day will highlight successes and look at areas where more work is needed to effect change.
This meeting will be taking place in Cape Town, South Africa.
Who should attend?
This meeting will be of interest to specialists and trainees in obstetrics and gynaecology, midwives, health care providers, policy makers and anyone with an interest in achieving Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5. Attendees will be able to participate in discussions as well as network with colleagues from around the world.
What are the Millennium Development Goals?
The eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were agreed at the United Nations Millennium Summit in September 2000. Nearly 190 countries have signed up to them. They cover a wide range of issues relating to extreme poverty, such as malnutrition, lack of education, status of women and combating HIV and malaria. MDG 4 is aimed at reducing child mortality.Maternal mortality is largely preventable and MDG5 relates to maternal health.
The aim is to reduce maternal death rates by 75% by 2015. It is a difficult goal as it is linked intimately to other MDGs including, child health and HIV and malaria (many women seek treatment for this when pregnant). To view the MDGs, visitwww.un.org/millenniumgoals.
